LIFE-GREENAPI: Innovating for the Future is the title of the event hosted by Angelini Pharma at its Fine Chemicals plant in Aprilia. This important event provided an opportunity to share the outcomes of the three-year LIFE-GREENAPI project, co-funded by the European Union.

The event highlighted details of the Group's ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) strategy alongside other initiatives aimed at the green transition, focusing on reducing the environmental and climate impact of active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) production. Over 150 participants, including representatives from scientific communities, pharmaceutical associations dedicated to technological and environmental innovation, and various stakeholders, joined Angelini Pharma to reflect on the key milestones achieved during the project's 18-month timeline.

The day began with a video addressing a fundamental question that shaped the initiative: Can we produce active pharmaceutical ingredients more sustainably?

A Day of Insightful Discussions

The event featured three sessions that sparked engaging discussions about the project:

1. Innovation and Sustainability

  • This session featured Angelini Pharma speakers presenting key aspects of the company’s ESG strategy, the evolving role of chemicals, and the production technology shifts necessitated by the green transition.
  • It underscored how the LIFE-GREENAPI project aligns with Angelini Pharma's broader green transition journey and its significance for the Group’s industrial sustainability strategies.
  • Highlights included the ESG strategy goals for 2030, focusing on the Fine Chemicals production site and its advancements in safety, quality, and productivity paradigms in response to environmental challenges.

2. Life Program and Green Transition in the Chemical-Pharmaceutical Sector

  • This session explored opportunities, challenges, and required skills, with contributions from Italy’s Ministry of Environment and Energy Security, Unindustria, and the University of Milan.
  • Key insights were shared about the green transition’s implications for Lazio's industrial plan and the critical competencies needed to transform traditionally polluting industries into sustainable businesses.
  • The discussion delved into a recent study by Federchimica and Milan University highlighting roles and skills essential for digital and ecological transitions, with examples from the EU Life Program showcasing applications and opportunities within the chemical-pharmaceutical industry.

3. The LIFE-GREENAPI Project Team's Contributions

  • The project team, including members from Angelini Pharma and Leiden University, provided an in-depth look at the project’s progress and methodologies, such as batch and flow chemistry.
  • They demonstrated how environmental and climate impacts are monitored using Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methods applied directly to the project.
  • The session concluded with the presentation of eight posters showcasing green transition initiatives, followed by an interactive Q&A with attendees.

The highlights from the event are available in a "Best Of" video created by Angelini Pharma.
